WELCOME TO THE MATRIX: APRIL — MINI DRIVERS AND NEW TRIPLE DIAMOND
Posted On
April 17, 2025

April may be Masters month but at GolfBox Custom we are calling it mini driver month.

New mini drivers from TaylorMade, Titleist and Callaway are now in the fitting draws, along with a niche Elyte Triple Diamond driver model that was a most welcome surprise.

Here’s what’s new in the GolfBox Custom fitting matrix this April.

TAYLORMADE R7 QUAD MINI DRIVER

TaylorMade have well and truly enlivened proceedings in the mini driver category with the release of a stunning nostalgic throwback to one of the most memorable drivers of the 2000s.

The new TaylorMade R7 Quad mini driver pays tribute to the trailblazing R7 Quad driver of 2004, the first driver in the game to offer adjustable weighting technology.

The new R7 Quad mini driver features a near-identical weighting system to its illustrious ancestor: four weights (2x13g and 2x3g) adjust launch angle and flight bias according to their configuration on the sole. The R7 mini driver features the same twin rear ports and heel-toe split located on the front of the sole as the original R7 Quad.

Meanwhile, the retro optics of the R7 Quad mini driver are evocative, with signature design elements of the original R7 Quad integrated seamlessly into the mini driver. However, the mini driver isn't retro in performance terms. It's fitted out with the entire suite of TaylorMade driver technology, making it a thoroughly modern and versatile club.

Twist Face straightens up strikes out of the heel and toe while a Speed Pocket offers forgiveness for low-face mis-hits — an essential inclusion when hitting the mini driver off the deck. TaylorMade’s carbon fibre Infinity Crown also appears, saving weight to be redirected to more beneficial areas of the head while offering a spotless appearance at address.

With a head volume of 305cc, the R7 Quad mini driver is positioned in the middle of the mini driver size matrix. It’s not as small as the 280cc Titleist GT280 but not as big as the 340cc Callaway Elyte mini driver. It's well suited off the tee but is also a viable option as the longest fairway wood in the bag.

The TaylorMade R7 Quad mini driver is available in 11.5° and 13.5° lofts.

TITLEIST GT280 MINI DRIVER

The new GT280 is Titleist’s first official mini driver (the previous TSR was technically a two wood) and its 280cc head volume is the most compact in the mini driver category.

Its design mimics the GT4 driver's front/rear adjustable weighting configuration. But its face design is inspired by Titleist’s GT fairway wood range.

The forged L-cup face includes a new insert that wraps around the bottom of the face to boost the performance of low strikes. The leading edge is also lower to automatically raise the strike location higher.

It’s arguably the most capable mini driver off the turf but that’s not to say it won’t hit accurate bullets off the tee.

The Titleist GT280 mini driver features 13° of loft and is fitted with Titleist’s SureFit hosel for additional loft tuning.

CALLAWAY ELYTE MINI DRIVER

Callaway’s new Elyte mini driver sits at the opposite end of the category to the Titleist GT280.

At 340cc, it’s the largest mini driver by a fair way and is essentially a shrunken down version of the standard Callaway Elyte driver.

Like the rest of the Elyte range, it features Callaway’s Ai 10x face, lightweight thermoforged carbon crown to promote a high-launching, low-spinning ball flight, and three discrete weight ports to create a fade, neutral or draw bias.

The Elyte mini driver is skewed towards accurate tee ball performance. However, it offers decent performance off the deck despite having the largest head.

CALLAWAY ELYTE TRIPLE DIAMOND MAX

The new Elyte Triple Diamond Max driver is a bit of a contradiction, but our Master Fitters already like what they see.

The Triple Diamond has always been the compact, low-spin, low-launching model in the Callaway driver range.

The new Elyte TD Max model, however, is a higher spinning version of the low-spin Triple Diamond model. And it also features the full 460cc head volume, although it’s disguised to appear like the more compact Triple Diamond model at address.

Confused? It is a niche performance profile. But don’t worry, our Master Fitters can determine if it’s the right driver for your game.

The Elyte TD Max is already one of the most popular drivers on tour, which suggests the niche performance profile might match up well with faster swing speed players who are seeking a little more forgiveness.
